Anytime you are driving, anywhere in Mexico, both the vehicle’s registration and the registered owner have to be in the car. Any licensed driver can be behind the wheel, as long as the person that the car is registered to is in the back seat. “It’s my buddy’s car and he’s back at camp” is NOT going to work.

If you are driving someone else’s car and they are not going to be with you, you must be carrying a notarized letter from the registered owner granting you permission. If it’s a rental car, someone whose name is on the rental company’s paperwork must be in the car.

If any of these necessary documents are missing, the suspicion of the car being stolen will rise, which will cause you many problems.
